Known as football in the U.S. and Canada, American football—also called gridiron—is a team sport featuring two squads of eleven players competing on a rectangular field with goalposts at both ends. The offensive team, holding possession of the oval ball, aims to progress... toward the opposing end zone by running or throwing the ball, while the defensive team works to halt their advance and regain control. Offenses must move the ball ten yards within four attempts (downs) to retain possession; failing this results in surrendering the ball to the opposition. Success grants a fresh set of four downs. Scoring occurs primarily by carrying or catching the ball in the opponent’s end zone (a touchdown) or kicking it through the goalposts (a field goal). The squad with the highest score when time expires claims victory.
