Description

The morning sun bathed the cobblestone square in gold as my brother tugged me toward the bustling puppet theater, its striped awning fluttering above chattering families. We laughed through the tale of a wooden hero outwitting a dragon, clapping until our palms stung—but when the curtains fell, mischief took hold. "Let's sneak backstage," he whispered, eyes gleaming. The puppeteer greeted us with a smile too wide, ink-stained fingers signing our programs as shadows shifted behind him. A cloying scent of sawdust and lavender filled my nostrils seconds before the sack yanked over my head. Now bound in a room dangling with half-carved marionettes, their painted eyes tracking our every fumble with the ropes, we parse whispers through creaking floorboards. They’re arguing about "the ritual" and "unwilling bones." My brother’s pocketknife saws at my restraints as I scan for exits—but the real question isn’t how to flee this attic. It’s why the puppet dragon on the wall has my brother’s exact smile carved into its jagged jaws.
